The Word of God can be amazing. Things kind of hum along in our reading and study of the scriptures and then suddenly something jumps up at us. It was that way recently while I was studying and reading on this current topic that has me pretty well consumed – creation. I was reading a little devotional written by Paul Taylor. He brought my attention to Ps. 89:34-37. God is speaking about his covenant to David: “Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David: his seed shall endure forever and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established forever like the moon, even like the faithful witness in the sky.” Paul Taylor wonders aloud about the moon being a faithful witness in the sky.
It is easy to skip over something like this and assign it to mere poetic language. I sometimes imagine that in heaven the Lord will hold classes and open our eyes to wondrous things in the Word that we never saw here on earth. Could this be one of those?
The phases of the moon mean that every month it “dies for three days” (is hidden, cannot be seen) before rising again to life!!!!! Has God so worked out the physics that the moon is a faithful witness to the death, burial, and resurrection of the Seed of David, Jesus Christ? Can it be? In all my reading lately, some great physicist made a statement that the math, the physics of the universe is so elegant that clearly someone (Someone) has been monkeying with the physics! Have a look for yourself at the phases of the moon below. The moon disappears for three days (24th, 25th, 26th) . A faithful witness to God’s covenant with David. Amazing.
