Fasting – Drawing Near

Comments Off

Continuing the theme from the last blog …  In Daniel 10 we see Daniel fasting again his usual fast of eating no pleasant food, meat or wine.  He was mourning for three weeks, praying for his people.  Suddenly in verse 5 he had a heavenly vision and God spoke to Him powerfully.  Interestingly in verse 12 the Lord says to him “Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself  before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words.” Daniel humbled himself through his fasting and the Lord heard.  He set his heart towards the Lord and He responded.

This reminds me of Moses and the burning bush.  When Moses saw the bush and it did not burn up the scripture says he “turned aside to see why the bush did not burn up.”  As we know God spoke to him out of the burning bush.

James 4:8 says “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”  We see in all this that a huge part of a season of fasting and prayer is to draw near to God, to turn aside to Him.  When we do this we can expect the Lord to draw near to us, to speak to us, to even give us heavenly visions.
